How to Practice Java Coding

The old cliche “practice makes perfect” applies well to programming. Unlike the old days of programming, where punchcards and slow machines made writing programs tedious, today’s software and technology make writing and testing code easy. However, in addition to a good development environment, a novice Java programmer needs to practice his skills and logic in order to continue to learn and grow.

Instructions

  1. Read about Java programming as much as possible. There are hundreds of books written on Java programming that can provide useful insights and code snippets. Also, take advantage of the many online communities of Java programmers for personalized advice and networking. Oracle, for example, has a whole forum section devoted to Java (see Resources).
  2. Doing your Java homework. Although it sounds simple, the best way to practice programming is to write code. Copy examples you find online, solve textbook coding challenges or write a simple game. Sites like DoMyProject provides online browser-based challenges for you to solve.
  3. Work with other programmers. There is technically no right way to write a program; as long as it works and solves the problem, it’s correct. Working with other programmers can give you a different perspective on a program, and help you expand your logic skills.
  4. Try another programming language to work on your logic. Some programmers initially have issues with Java syntax; working in another programming language like Ruby or C++ will teach you how to use common programming structures. You can then convert your logic to Java syntax.
